Bio: When Roy Gilbert Walton was born on October 25, 1929, in Newark, New Jersey, his father, Clarence, was 22 and his mother, Ida, was 20. Roy Gilbert Walton, my paternal grandfather, was born October 25th, 1929 to Clarence William Walton and Thelma Williams in Newark, New Jersey. Growing up Roy moved numerous times before the age of 10, finally in fourth grade they settled in Newark, New Jersey. They lived in a six tenant apartment building similar to those of a dumbbell apartment. They had a kitchen, living room, and two bedrooms. He shared a bedroom with his two sisters. The stove in their kitchen was the only source of heat in the entire apartment. Some buildings didn't have bathrooms, so they would have to visit bath houses where you would step into a shower then into a pool and rotate at the blow of a whistle.
Growing up Roy was always working, he was driven. He worked every summer at his aunt's fish market at the Jersey Shore and made a mere $20 a week. He paid his aunt $5 for rent, send $5 to his mother to help support the family, and saved the rest. Back home, during the school year, he worked at a bowling alley setting up pins. He made $30 a week. Roy gave $2 to his mother everyday to help pay the bills and used the rest to pay for his own expenses.
Roy graduated from high school in 1948 and was the first in his family to do so. Soon after, he married Anna Rose Baccaro in February 1952 in his hometown, whom he had known most of his life. Shortly after they were married he was drafted into the Army due to the Korean War and was shipped off to Panama. Back at home Rose was pregnant with their first child, Nancy Rose Walton. Roy spent 2 years in Panama and was in charge of the company armor. He took care of all the weapons stored in his facility, which included rocket launchers, 50 caliber machine guns, torpedoes and other heavy artillery. After a command inspection was completed, Roy passed with a 98%, the man before him had failed. Roy was extremely good at his job and was driven to be even better
.
When Roy returned home, Nancy had been born and was approaching the age of 2. She did not know exactly who he was so she referred to him as "Honey" because that is what her mother called him. They had three children during their marriage. He died on April 27, 2016, in Tarpon Springs, Florida, at the age of 86.
