Bio: When Anna Rose Walton was born on December 28, 1930, in Newark, New Jersey, her father, Michael, was 26, and her mother, Rose, was 26. She married Roy Gilbert Walton in February 1952 in her hometown. They had three children during their marriage. We discussed The influence she had from her grandmother being an immigrant from Calabria, Italy and the life style she had growing up in a house hold where she was only the second generation to be born in America. Her grandmother, Lena Pugliese, came to America from Calabria, Italy with her parents when she was 18. Lena was scared of this new world her parents were bringing her to. She did not know a lot about where she was going and knew she was going to miss Italy. One thing she was going to miss most about Italy was the grapes. Being a young girl with little knowledge of the United States, she didn't think there were grapes in America; because of this she packed grapes for her trip over and cherished them. One by one she ate them on the ship and savored each one. When Lena arrived in America she was pleased to learn they too had grapes.
Lena and her parents settled in New Jersey, which is where my grandmother, Anna Rose Baccaro, would be born and raised. Rose grew up with her grandmother living in the same house-hold, this had a huge impact on her as a child. She would help her grandmother cook and there was always something ethnic being whipped up the kitchen! Whenever dinner was ready Rose's grandmother would always stick her head out the door and say "Wose dinnnnna." (her attempt at saying "Rose dinner" with her heavy accent). When Rose began dating Roy Walton, Rose's grandmother insisted on feeding Roy whenever he came to visit. She insisted on it as she felt he was too thin. Food has always been an important part of the Italian tradition.
Rose is the oldest of two daughters, and very headstrong. When Rose felt her sister, Joan, was too old to wear her hair in pigtails any longer, Rose had a friend hold Joan while she, Rose, cut the pigtails off. And, whenever Frank Sinatra was performing in New York, Rose would sneak off to see his show. When the High School made her parents aware of her absence, they decided to drive her to school. If Frank Sinatra was performing, Rose would walk in the front door of the school and sneak out the back of the school to go watch the show. Whatever Rose wants, Rose gets!
Since her grandmother only spoke Italian when she came over, as Rose grew up, she watched her grandmother work hard to learn English. Though her grandmother only obtained broken English, the determination and effort she witnessed was truly inspiring to Rose. Seeing how hard her grandmother worked to provide for her family, to learn English, and how important family and family gathers were helped shape the person Rose became. Rose worked hard to provide for her family and friends. She died on April 4, 2020, at the age of 89
